After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’ actions and restore order to the universe.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios` grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.” With an estimated budget of $356 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made.

Avengers: Endgame

Soon after Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlet to disintegrate half of all life, Carol Danvers rescues Tony Stark and Nebula and returns them to Earth. They reunite with the remaining Avengers—Bruce Banner, Steve Rogers, Rocket, Thor, Natasha Romanoff, and James Rhodes— to retake the Infinity Stones and reverse the disintegrations. They confront Thanos, but find that he has destroyed the Stones. Thor kills Thanos.

Five years later, Scott Lang escapes from the quantum realm. At the Avengers’ compound, he explains that five years had been only five hours for him, and proposes building a quantum realm time machine. Stark refuses to help out of fear of undoing the birth of his daughter, who was born after the disintegration.

After talking with his wife, Pepper Potts, Stark relents and with Banner, successfully builds a time machine. Banner and Rocket recruit Thor from the home of the Asgardian refugees. Romanoff recruits Clint Barton, now a ruthless vigilante after his family was disintegrated.

Banner, Lang, Rogers, and Stark travel to New York City in 2012. Banner visits the Sanctum Sanctorum and convinces the Ancient One to give him the Time Stone. Rogers successfully retrieves the Mind Stone. Stark and Lang’s interference inadvertently allows Loki to escape with the Space Stone. Rogers and Stark travel to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in 1970 and steal an earlier version of the Space Stone.

Rocket and Thor travel to Asgard in 2013 and extract the Reality Stone from Jane Foster, and also retrieve Thor’s hammer Mjolnir. Nebula and Rhodes travel to Morag in 2014 and steal the Power Stone before Peter Quill can. Rhodes returns to the present with the Power Stone, but Nebula is unable to return when her cybernetic implants interface with those of her past self.

Through this connection, the Thanos of 2014 learns of his future success and the Avengers’ attempts to undo it. Thanos captures Nebula and sends past Nebula to the present day disguised as her future self. Barton and Romanoff travel to Vormir in the same year, and learn that the Soul Stone requires the death of a loved one. Romanoff sacrifices herself, allowing Barton to obtain the Soul Stone.

Reuniting in the present, the Avengers fit the Stones into a Stark-created gauntlet. Banner dons the gauntlet and resurrects all those whom Thanos had disintegrated. Past Nebula uses the time machine to transport past Thanos and his warship to the present. Thanos attacks the Avengers’ compound. Nebula convinces past Gamora to turn against Thanos, and kills her past self.

Stark, Rogers and Thor battle Thanos, during which Rogers proves worthy of wielding Mjolnir. Doctor Strange arrives with other sorcerers, the Avengers, and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as the armies of Wakanda, Asgard, and the Ravagers; they fight Thanos’ army. Danvers arrives and destroys Thanos’ warship. Thanos seizes the gauntlet, but Stark takes the Stones and disintegrates Thanos and his army, himself succumbing to the radiation emitted by wielding the Stones.

Following Stark’s funeral, Thor appoints Valkyrie as the ruler of New Asgard and joins the Guardians of the Galaxy. Rogers returns the Infinity Stones to their original places in time, and remains in the past to be with Peggy Carter. In the present, an elderly Steve Rogers gives his shield to Sam Wilson.

As of May 5, 2019, Avengers: Endgame has grossed $619.7 million in the United States and Canada, and $1.569 billion in other territories, for a worldwide total of $2.189 billion. It is the highest-grossing film of 2019, as well as the second-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide and ninth-highest in the United States and Canada.

In late December 2018, Endgame was named the second-most anticipated 2019 film by IMDb behind Captain Marvel, the most anticipated blockbuster of 2019 according to the ticketing service Fandango, and the most anticipated overall film by Atom Tickets.

Due to the high demand when pre-sale tickets became available in the U.S. on April 2, 2019, customers on both Atom Tickets and Fandango experienced long wait times and system delays, while AMC Theatres’ website and app crashed completely for several hours.

The same day, Fandango announced the film became its top-selling pre-sale title for the first 24 hours, topping Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ previous record in just six hours. Atom said the film was also the website’s best selling first-day film (outselling Aquaman by four times), and Regal Cinemas reported that Endgame had sold more tickets in its first eight hours than Infinity War did in its entire first week.

The film grossed $120–140 million in pre-sales alone. The day prior to the film’s release, Fandango announced it was its biggest pre-selling title of all time, beating The Force Awakens, with over 8,000 sold out showtimes across the country.

In India, the film sold one million tickets in just one day for the English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu language screenings; 18 tickets were sold every second. In China, pre-sale tickets became available on April 12 and sold a record one million tickets in just six hours, outselling Infinity War’s first 24 hour total within the first hour, and made $114.5 million (RMB 770 million) just from pre-sales.
